Short answer: Plaid has four pricing plans. Trial is free for up to 10 Production Items, Pay-as-you-go has no minimum or commitment, Growth has a minimum spend and an annual commitment for API usage up to about 6,000 dollars a month, and Custom, also called Scale, has a higher minimum for usage above 2,000 dollars a month. Plaid does not publish per-product prices. You see Pay-as-you-go and Growth rates on the last page of the Production access request, and Custom rates come from sales.
We read Plaid's pricing and billing documentation in October 2026 and checked each statement below against it. Where Plaid does not publish a number, we say so, because the figures you find on aggregator sites conflict with each other and none of them comes from Plaid.
Plaid pricing plans at a glance
| Plan | Commitment | Best fit, in Plaid's words | How you get it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trial | None, free | Evaluating Plaid with real Production data, limited to 10 Items | Dashboard, US and Canada teams created on or after 15 April 2026 |
| Pay-as-you-go | No minimum spend | Hobbyist use or early-stage small businesses | Dashboard sign-up |
| Growth | Minimum spend, annual commitment | Small to medium businesses with API usage up to 6,000 dollars a month, with SSO, priority support and an account manager | Sales |
| Custom (Scale) | Higher minimum, annual commitment | API usage over 2,000 dollars a month or enterprise needs, with the lowest per-use costs | Sales |
The ranges overlap on purpose. A company spending 3,000 dollars a month could sit on Growth or Custom, and the choice usually comes down to which products you need, because several are sold only on Custom.
Which Plaid products need a Custom plan?
Plaid sells these only on Custom plans: Signal Transaction Scores, Transfer, Document Income with bank statements, Payment Initiation and Virtual Accounts, Layer, Protect, and every Plaid Check product except Base Report and Income Insights Report. Customers in the EU or UK, or serving end users there, can only buy Custom plans at all. No Plaid Check products are available on Pay-as-you-go.
The Trial plan covers Assets, Auth, Balance, Identity, Investments, Liabilities, Transactions and Statements. That is enough to build and test a bank-linking product end to end, but not to move money, since Transfer is not on the list.
How Plaid bills each product
The reason Plaid pricing is hard to compare is that products are billed in different ways. Knowing which model applies tells you what drives your bill, even before you see a rate.
| Billing model | Products | What triggers the charge |
|---|---|---|
| One-time fee | Auth, Identity, Income, Layer | The product is added to an Item, however many calls follow |
| Subscription fee | Transactions, Recurring Transactions, Liabilities, Investments | Every month an access token exists for the Item |
| Per-request flat fee | Balance, Signal Transaction Scores, Investments Move, Identity Match, refresh endpoints, Asset Report PDF and Audit Copy | Each successful API call |
| Per-request flexible fee | Assets, Statements Refresh, Enrich | Each call, scaled by Items, days of history or transactions |
| Per-Item flexible fee | Statements | Item creation, scaled by the number of statements in range |
| Per payment | Payment Initiation | Each payment the end user confirms |
| Transfer fee model | Transfer | Auth fee, Signal fee and a per-transfer fee |
Two of these catch teams out. Subscription products keep billing until you call /item/remove, so lost access tokens can mean paying for Items nobody uses. And one-time products added through optional_products are not charged until you call their endpoint, which is a cheap way to keep options open in Link. Sandbox usage is always free.
Plaid API pricing for developers
There is no separate charge for API access itself. Endpoints that are not tied to a product, such as Institutions and Item endpoints, are typically free. You pay for products, under the models above. If you use a Plaid partner with a processor token, the partner's calls are billed to you as if you had made them, and they do not appear in your own Dashboard usage report, which is worth knowing before you hand a token to a third party.
For lenders, the Plaid Check products are billed by bundle or by product. Bundles such as Plaid Income and Plaid Underwriting charge when the first report endpoint is called, and a report expires after 24 hours. If you underwrite from the documents Plaid returns, an AI loan underwriting tool that reads lender documents is a separate purchase from the data itself.
Plaid Transfer fees explained
Plaid Transfer has three primary fees, according to Plaid's billing documentation:
- Auth fee. Each Item initialized with Transfer also gets Auth and pays the one-time Auth fee, unless it was created with
/transfer/migrate_account. - Signal fee. Each call to
/transfer/authorization/createor/transfer/intent/createincurs a per-request fee for the Signal or Balance check. - Per-transfer fee. Charged for each transfer successfully created, and also for moving funds between your bank account and your Plaid Ledger balance, such as sweeps.
On top come operational fees for things like ACH returns, incoming wires, and requests for Plaid to provide a Written Statement of Unauthorized Debit. Contracts signed or renewed before 1 October 2025 may still mention a Transfer Risk Engine fee per authorization call.
Note what drives the total. Every authorization costs money, whether or not a transfer follows, and every transfer costs money on top. A process that authorizes freely and retries often pays for each attempt.
A worked Plaid budget for a US product team
Plaid's rates are private, so a fair budget is a set of counts you multiply by the quote. Take a US B2B payments app with 2,000 linked business accounts that pulls balances before each payment and sends 6,000 ACH transfers a month:
| Line | Monthly count | Billing model |
|---|---|---|
| New linked accounts with Transfer | 150 new Items | One-time Auth fee each |
| Transfer authorizations | 6,000 calls, plus retries | Per-request Signal or Balance fee each |
| Transfers created | 6,000 | Per-transfer fee each |
| Ledger sweeps | About 20 | Per-transfer fee each |
| ACH returns | Depends on return rate | Operational fee each |
| Transactions for cash-flow views | 2,000 active Items | Monthly subscription per Item |
Ask sales for the rate on each line and for the minimum commitment, and you have a real number. The structure also shows where costs grow fastest: authorizations and transfers scale with activity, while the Auth fee scales with new customers.
What changes when AI agents call Plaid
Plaid now runs a hosted MCP server that connects Claude and ChatGPT to your Plaid Dashboard data. We checked it on 24 October 2026: its five tools read diagnostics, Link analytics and usage, and none moves money. The full measurement is on our Plaid MCP server and Transfer API limits page.
The cost question starts when an agent gets a tool that calls the Transfer API. Each attempt pays a Signal fee, each success pays a per-transfer fee, and the only limits Plaid enforces are the single, daily and monthly caps it set for your whole company at onboarding. Those caps are read-only through the API and know nothing about which agent sent the request. An agent that loops or retries can run up authorization fees and move money right up to your company ceiling.
That is the gap AgentsPay closes. Each agent gets its own budget, a per-transfer ceiling, a list of allowed payees and an approval threshold with a named approver, checked before your server calls Plaid. The same spend controls for AI agents apply when the agent pays by card instead, and our AgentsPay plans are priced by agent wallet with no per-transaction fee.
Plaid vs other bank and payments platforms on price
US teams often price Plaid next to a business account with its own API. Mercury publishes flat plans of 0, 35 and 350 dollars a month, covered in our Mercury pricing plans guide, and Airwallex publishes per-user plans plus FX and transfer fees, covered in our Airwallex pricing breakdown. Those are accounts you hold money in. Plaid is infrastructure that connects to your customers' accounts, so it is priced per Item, per call and per transfer instead. The comparison that matters is not which is cheaper, but whether you need to read and move other people's money or manage your own.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Plaid cost?
Plaid does not publish per-product prices. It has four plans: a free Trial for 10 Production Items, Pay-as-you-go with no minimum, Growth with a minimum spend and annual commitment, and Custom with a higher minimum. Pay-as-you-go and Growth rates appear on the last page of the Production access request in the Plaid Dashboard.
Is Plaid free to use?
Plaid's Sandbox is always free, and the Trial plan gives free access to real Production data for up to 10 Items for teams in the US and Canada created on or after 15 April 2026. Removing Trial Items does not free up slots. After 10 Items, you need a paid plan to create more.
What is the Plaid Pay-as-you-go plan?
Pay-as-you-go is Plaid's paid plan with no minimum spend and no commitment, so you pay only for what you use. Plaid recommends it for hobbyist use and early-stage small businesses. It does not include Transfer, Signal Transaction Scores or any Plaid Check product, which are sold on other plans.
How much does Plaid Transfer cost?
Plaid does not publish Transfer rates, and Transfer is sold only on Custom plans. The fee model has three parts: a one-time Auth fee per linked Item, a per-request Signal or Balance fee on each authorization, and a per-transfer fee, plus operational fees for events such as ACH returns and incoming wires.
Does Plaid charge per API call?
Only for some products. Balance, Signal Transaction Scores, Identity Match and refresh endpoints charge per successful call, and Assets, Enrich and Statements Refresh charge per call scaled by volume. Auth and Identity charge once per Item, and Transactions, Liabilities and Investments charge a monthly subscription per Item.
How do I stop paying for unused Plaid Items?
Call /item/remove for each Item you no longer need. Subscription products such as Transactions bill every month while a valid access token exists, so keep every access token you create in Production. If you lost tokens that are still being billed, Plaid asks you to contact support.
