Software engineer and finance lead reviewing API integration costs together at a standing desk

Short answer: the Bill.com API has no separate price. BILL's pricing page lists API access as included on all four AP and AR plans (Essentials at 49 dollars, Team at 65 dollars and Corporate at 89 dollars per user per month, plus custom-priced Enterprise) and on Spend & Expense, which costs 0 dollars per user. What an API integration really costs is the seats you need plus BILL's per-payment fees, starting at 0.59 dollars per ACH payment.

If you are scoping a BILL integration this quarter, whether it is a sync with your ERP, a custom AP workflow or an AI agent that pays vendors, the plan grid will not give you the number you need. It prices users, and your integration spends money per payment. We read BILL's price list and its developer documentation on 14 October 2026 and turned them into one budget you can defend.

All prices are US list from bill.com/product/pricing, billed monthly. The plan you pick matters for an integration for reasons other than the API: Team and Corporate add automatic two-way sync with QuickBooks Online and Xero, Corporate adds custom approval policies and custom user roles, and only Enterprise adds two-way sync with NetSuite, Sage Intacct and Microsoft Dynamics, plus dual control.

Is the Bill.com API free?

The API itself is free to use for any BILL customer. There is no per-call charge, no developer platform fee and no separate API tier on BILL's price list. You do need a paid BILL subscription for AP and AR, or a Spend & Expense account, and every payment the API sends carries the same transaction fee it would carry in the web app.

Which Bill.com plan includes API access?

All of them. BILL's plan comparison marks API access as included on Essentials, Team, Corporate and Enterprise, and on both accountant plans. The reason to move up is not the API but what the integration needs around it, usually automatic accounting sync on Team, custom approval rules on Corporate, or ERP sync on Enterprise.

What BILL charges per payment

This is where the money is. BILL charges the payer per payment, and the fee depends entirely on the method chosen.

Payment methodPayer fee
ACH or ePayment0.59 dollars
Check, mailed by BILL1.99 dollars
Virtual cardFree
International FX wire or local transferFree, exchange rate applies
International USD wire19.99 dollars
Instant Payment1.0 percent, 9.99 dollar minimum, 100 dollar maximum
Pay Faster ACH11.99 dollars
Pay by credit or debit card2.9 percent
Void a check25 dollars

How much does Bill.com charge per ACH payment?

0.59 dollars per ACH or ePayment for the payer, on every plan. Receivers paid by ACH also pay 0.59 dollars on their side. Virtual card payments are free for the payer, which is why many AP teams push vendors toward card where they accept it.

A worked monthly budget for an automated AP integration

Take a US company with three finance users on the Team plan, sending 500 vendor payments a month through an API integration: 350 by ACH, 80 by mailed check, 60 by virtual card and 10 urgent payments averaging 4,000 dollars sent instantly.

LineArithmeticMonthly cost
Seats3 users x 65 dollars195.00 dollars
API accessIncluded0.00 dollars
ACH payments350 x 0.59 dollars206.50 dollars
Mailed checks80 x 1.99 dollars159.20 dollars
Virtual cards60 x 0 dollars0.00 dollars
Instant Payments10 x 1 percent of 4,000 dollars = 10 x 40 dollars400.00 dollars
Total960.70 dollars

Look at the last fee line. Ten instant payments cost almost twice as much as 350 ACH payments. That is not a problem when a person picks Instant Payment for a genuinely urgent vendor. It becomes one when the integration, or an AI agent driving it, picks the payment method on its own. Switch those same 500 payments to Instant Payment at an average of 2,000 dollars and the fee line alone becomes 10,000 dollars a month, because each payment costs 20 dollars instead of 0.59.

Bill.com API rate limits are part of the price

BILL does not charge for API calls, but it does ration them, and the limits shape how you build:

  • 20,000 requests per developer key per hour for the AP and AR API, after which BILL returns error BDC_1144 until the next hour.
  • 200 logins per developer key per hour, so reuse sessions instead of logging in per call.
  • 3 concurrent requests per developer key per organization, the limit that usually bites first in a batch job.
  • 60 calls per token per minute for the Spend & Expense API.
  • 5 text messages per minute on any endpoint that sends one, such as an MFA challenge.

For volume, BILL gives you bulk tools instead of a higher limit: one bulk payment request pays up to 50 bills and one mass payment request pays up to 2,000. Both require an MFA-trusted session, as does single payment creation. If your engineers are building the reconciliation side as well, matching those payments back to the bank feed is usually a separate job, and dedicated bank reconciliation software handles it without more custom code against BILL.

Does Bill.com charge per API call?

No. There is no per-call or per-request fee anywhere on BILL's price list. The constraints are rate limits, 20,000 AP and AR requests per developer key per hour and 3 concurrent requests per organization, and the per-payment fees that apply to whatever the API sends.

Does Bill.com charge for the MCP server?

BILL lists no fee for its MCP server, which is in beta and open to eligible US organizations. It connects Claude and ChatGPT to your BILL data through your normal login and is read-only, so it cannot create or pay anything. Your AI assistant subscription is the only extra cost. We measured what it exposes on our Bill.com MCP server page.

The cost line no BILL plan caps

BILL prices seats and payments. It does not put a ceiling on what an automated caller can spend, and for a script you wrote yourself that is reasonable, because the script does exactly what you coded. An AI agent is different. It decides the vendor, the amount and the method at run time, and it can be steered by text in an invoice or an email.

BILL's own controls help, and you should use them: amount-based approval policies on Corporate and Enterprise, MFA on payment creation, and budget limits in Spend & Expense. But when we read all 325 operations in the BILL v3 API, none of the 11 operations that create or change approval policies, budgets or card limits required an MFA-trusted session, and the Spend & Expense API only accepts tokens generated by an ADMIN user. An agent with that token can raise the very limit meant to hold it.

So budget for two things. The BILL subscription and fees above, and a policy layer that gives each agent its own spending ceiling outside BILL. AgentsPay does that part: a per-agent budget and per-transaction cap, payment-method rules such as no Instant Payment without sign-off, and approval routing by amount to a named person. The agent asks first and calls BILL only on approval. For the wider pattern, see our guide to AI bill pay agents.

Questions buyers ask about Bill.com pricing

How much does Bill.com cost per user?

Bill.com costs 49 dollars per user per month on Essentials, 65 on Team and 89 on Corporate, billed monthly, with Enterprise quoted on request. Spend & Expense is 0 dollars per user. Corporate and Enterprise offer discounts for approver-only users, which matters if many managers only approve bills.

Is the Bill.com API available on the Essentials plan?

Yes. BILL's plan comparison marks API access as included on Essentials, its cheapest AP and AR plan at 49 dollars per user per month. Essentials syncs with accounting software by manual CSV import and export only, so integrations that need automatic accounting sync usually start on Team.

What is the cheapest way to pay vendors through the Bill.com API?

Virtual card is free for the payer and ACH costs 0.59 dollars per payment, so those two methods keep an integration's fee line low. Mailed checks cost 1.99 dollars and Instant Payment costs 1 percent with a 9.99 dollar minimum and 100 dollar maximum, so restrict those to payments a person has approved.
