Short answer: Workato bills a platform edition plus usage measured in Workato credits. Enterprise editions are quoted by sales, but the self-service Workato Pro plan is public: 75 dollars a month for 2,500 credits up to 1,275 dollars a month for 50,000 credits, paid by card, with no rollover. Workflows burn credits per action step (Tasks) and Genies per prompt (Genie actions).
If you are pricing Workato for a budget review this quarter, the usual advice is "talk to sales". That is true for the enterprise editions. It is not the whole story. Workato's billing documentation publishes the self-service price list and the exact rules for what counts as usage, and we read all of it on 9 October 2026. Below is every published number, the third-party ranges for enterprise deals, and one cost the credit meter never sees.
Workato pricing at a glance
| Plan | Price | Credits | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Workato Free | No charge | 50,000 credits, one-time grant | Proving one workflow before you buy |
| Workato Pro | 75 USD a month | 2,500 a month | A single team with light automation |
| Workato Pro | 100 USD a month | 3,500 a month | Light automation with some headroom |
| Workato Pro | 275 USD a month | 10,000 a month | A department running several recipes |
| Workato Pro | 780 USD a month | 30,000 a month | Steady production workloads |
| Workato Pro | 1,275 USD a month | 50,000 a month | The ceiling before an enterprise contract |
| Enterprise editions | Quoted by Workato sales | Purchased balance | Company-wide integration, MCP and agents |
Pro credits expire at the end of each billing month. Unused credits do not roll over, so sizing the tier to your real month matters more than it does with a prepaid pool.
How much does Workato cost per month?
For a self-service buyer, between 75 and 1,275 dollars a month, depending on the credit tier you pick at signup. The unit price falls as you climb: 3.0 cents a credit at 75 dollars, 2.75 cents at 275 dollars and 2.55 cents at 1,275 dollars. Above 50,000 credits a month you move to an enterprise edition, where the price is a negotiated platform fee plus a purchased credit balance, which third-party buying guides describe as an annual commitment.
Workato's public pricing page lists no enterprise prices at all, only "Talk to sales". The ranges that circulate come from procurement data, not from Workato. Zapier's write-up of Workato pricing, citing Vendr deal data, puts a Business edition with 5 million tasks a year at about 61,800 to 78,500 dollars a year and an Enterprise edition at the same volume at 84,200 to 128,300 dollars. Treat those as negotiation anchors, not list prices, and expect your quote to be built in credits.
Workato pricing model with editions, credits and add-ons
Workato's billing docs describe three parts. The platform edition decides which capabilities you can use, and each edition includes everything in the one below it. Usage is the variable part, measured in Workato credits, a single unit that every capability draws from. Workato's own analogy is arcade tokens: you buy one stack and spend it on any game, each game costing a different number of tokens. Add-ons such as extra concurrency or on-premise agents are billed separately from credits.
The useful consequence is that you do not budget workflows, document processing and agents separately. The less useful one is that the conversion rate from each metric into credits sits in your contract. The billing pages we read publish the metrics and the counting rules, not the exchange rate.
What counts as a Task in Workato?
A Task is one action step that runs in a workflow recipe job. Triggers do not count, and neither do control steps such as IF conditions, loops themselves, error handlers and Stop job. The rules that move a bill:
- Loops count per iteration. An action inside a Repeat for each over 500 records is 500 Tasks.
- A bulk or batch action is 1 Task, however many records it processes. Batching is the single biggest lever on a Workato bill.
- Failed steps do not count, but steps that finish with an expected 4xx or 5xx response do, and successful steps before a job fails still count.
- AI by Workato actions count as more than one Task each; the multiple is in your contract.
- Recipe functions count the call and the function's own action steps.
Workato's own worked example is an invoice workflow with four action steps, a two-step validation function, six document pages and one event: 6 Tasks, 6 Pages and 1 Event. Document pages and events are counted on top of Tasks, never instead of them.
Workato usage metrics for each capability
| Capability | Metric | How it is counted |
|---|---|---|
| Workflow recipes | Tasks | Per action step executed in a job |
| Genies (Agent Studio) | Genie actions | Per prompt sent to a Genie by a user or a system |
| Skills | Tasks, or included | Included in the Genie action when a Genie calls them; Tasks when called over MCP |
| MCP servers | Varies | Billed as the asset the server invokes |
| MCP proxy | MCP Proxy Calls | Per request routed to a third-party MCP server |
| Managed API | API Calls | Per successful request; slow responses can count as more than one |
| Data pipelines | Rows | Per row extracted from the source |
| Document processing (IDP) | Pages | Per page, added on top of the host asset |
| Event streams | Events | Per message published |
| Workato GO and Workflow apps | Seats | Per assigned end user |
If most of your planned volume is pulling fields out of supplier PDFs, price the IDP pages carefully, and compare them with a dedicated tool that can extract invoice data into structured fields before the documents ever reach a recipe.
How Workato prices Genies and Agent Studio
Agent Studio is metered in Genie actions, and the rule is simple: each prompt sent to a Genie is one Genie action, whatever the prompt asks and whichever model answers. Reasoning, knowledge retrieval, handoffs to other Genies and the skills the Genie calls are all included. Only a few things bill on top: recipe functions called from a skill (Tasks), document pages (Pages) and published events (Events).
Workato's example is a quality manager who sends a Genie two prompts to investigate a supplier defect and start a recall. The total is 2 Genie actions, 5 Tasks and 12 Events: two prompts, a five-step recall function, and twelve store notifications. The same skill called by Claude or ChatGPT through a Workato MCP server would bill its steps as Tasks instead, which is worth knowing before you expose a skill to an outside model. We cover what those MCP servers can do with money on our Workato MCP and Workato Genies page.
Is there a Workato free trial?
Yes, in effect. Workato Free is a self-service signup that grants 50,000 credits once, with access to the same orchestration, AI and agent capabilities as Workato Pro. Once the one-time credits are spent, you move to a Pro tier by card or to an enterprise quote.
The cost Workato credits never meter
A Genie action costs the same whether the prompt reads ten leads from Salesforce or tells a skill to refund a customer, approve a supplier bill or submit a purchase request. Credits meter Workato's work. They do not meter the money your agent moves, and Workato's MCP Gateway limits tool calls per hour or month, not dollars.
| Line in the business case | Example month |
|---|---|
| Workato Pro tier | 275 USD for 10,000 credits |
| Refund prompts a support Genie handles | 600 prompts, 600 Genie actions |
| Refunds those prompts issue (illustrative, 60 USD average) | 36,000 USD |
The Workato line has a ceiling: you picked the tier. The refund line has none unless you add one. That is the gap AgentsPay fills. The skill calls AgentsPay with the agent, amount and counterparty before the action runs, and AgentsPay checks the per-agent budget and per-transaction cap and the approval threshold. Larger amounts wait for a person in Slack or email, and every decision lands in an audit trail your controller can export.
How to budget Workato without overpaying
- Count action steps, not recipes. Multiply steps by runs per month, and multiply loop steps by records.
- Batch wherever the connector allows it. One bulk action is one Task.
- Count prompts for each Genie, not skills, and list any skill you plan to expose over MCP separately, since those bill as Tasks.
- Add Pages and Events on top for document processing and event streams.
- Size the Pro tier to an average month, because unused credits expire.
- Put the money your agents move in its own budget line, with a hard limit outside the agent.
Is Workato worth it at these prices?
For a company already integrating a dozen systems, usually yes. The credit model is clearer than most enterprise automation pricing, Genie actions are cheap relative to the work they replace, and the self-service tiers let a team prove value for 75 dollars a month before a procurement cycle. The risk is not the Workato invoice, which you can cap by tier. It is what a Genie with a refund, bill or purchasing skill can do inside that invoice, so put the dollar limit where the agent cannot reach it.
Frequently asked questions
Does Workato publish its pricing?
Partly. Workato's pricing page lists no enterprise prices and routes buyers to sales. Its billing documentation does publish the self-service Workato Pro tiers, from 75 dollars a month for 2,500 credits to 1,275 dollars a month for 50,000 credits, along with the rules for how every capability uses credits.
What is a Workato credit?
A Workato credit is the single billing unit used across every capability. You buy a balance, and workflows, document processing, APIs and Genies all draw from it, each converting its own metric, such as Tasks or Genie actions, into credits. The conversion rate for each metric is set in your contract.
Do unused Workato credits roll over?
Not on Workato Pro. Pro credits are a monthly limit that expires at the end of each billing month. The Workato Free grant of 50,000 credits is one-time. Enterprise credit balances follow the terms of your contract, so ask about expiry and overage rates when you negotiate.
How much does a Workato Genie cost per prompt?
Each prompt is one Genie action, regardless of complexity or model, and it includes the skills, reasoning and knowledge lookups the Genie uses to answer. What a Genie action costs in dollars depends on its credit conversion in your contract and your price per credit, which on Workato Pro runs from 2.55 to 3.0 cents.
