Short answer: an agentic credit card is a card credential issued specifically for an AI agent, with its own limit, so the agent can buy without seeing your real card number. Robinhood's agentic credit card is the only one sold under that name today, and it is a consumer product for Gold Card holders. American Express offers the strongest protection for agent mistakes through its ACE kit, but access is invite-only. For a business running several agents, the practical answer is a virtual card per agent behind a policy that totals spend per agent across every card.
We compared the options a US finance or engineering lead can actually use this quarter, from the issuers' own announcements and terms as of October 2026. Where something is invite-only or consumer-only, we say so, because that decides whether you can buy it at all.
Agentic credit card options compared
| Option | Who can get it | How the limit works | Who pays for an agent mistake | Fit for a business |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Robinhood agentic credit card | Robinhood Gold Card holders (Gold membership is 50 dollars a year) | A monthly limit, or manual approval of every purchase | The cardholder, under Robinhood's terms | Poor. Personal card, one owner |
| Amex through ACE | Card Members using an agent registered with American Express; developer access by invitation | An amount inside each certified purchase intent | Amex, under Agent Purchase Protection, for registered agent errors | Promising, once your agent vendor is registered |
| Visa Intelligent Commerce token | Through issuers and agent platforms that integrate it | Consumer mandate and issuer controls on the token | Normal card dispute rules | Depends on your issuer |
| Mastercard Agent Pay token | Through issuers and agent platforms that integrate it | Issuer and consumer controls on the agentic token | Normal card dispute rules | Depends on your issuer |
| Corporate virtual card per agent | Any company with a card program such as Ramp, Brex or an issuing API | Per-card limit and merchant lock | The company | Good, but no agent identity or cross-card total |
| AgentsPay | Businesses and agent platforms | Per-agent monthly budget, per-transaction cap, approval threshold | Blocked by policy before the card is charged | Built for it |
What is the Robinhood agentic credit card?
Robinhood launched it on 27 May 2026. A Gold Card holder connects an AI agent such as Claude or ChatGPT to Robinhood Banking's MCP server and creates a dedicated virtual Gold Card for it. The agent sees that virtual card, its transactions and its policies, and never the primary card number. You choose between a monthly limit the agent can spend up to on its own, or manual approval of each purchase, and you can delete the virtual card at any time. Purchases earn 3 percent cash back.
The terms are the part to read before you hand it to anything important. Robinhood says that when you instruct an external agent, you authorize it to transact and you are solely responsible for transactions made under those instructions. An agent purchase is therefore an authorized purchase, not fraud, so the usual cap on unauthorized-use liability does not help when the agent simply buys the wrong thing. It is also a personal card. A company with five agents and three approvers cannot run it as a program.
Can an AI agent use an American Express card?
Yes, and Amex has gone further than anyone on the risk question. Its Agentic Commerce Experiences kit, announced on 14 April 2026, registers each developer's agent, lets the Card Member enroll that agent from the Amex app, and records every purchase intent with what to buy, where, how much can be spent and when extra approval is needed. The agent gets a short-lived credential bound to that one intent. If a registered agent then makes a mistake, such as a wrong item or a duplicate charge, Amex Agent Purchase Protection backs the Card Member.
Two catches for a business. The ACE specification was invite-only when we checked on 7 October 2026, so you depend on your agent vendor being registered. And the amount lives in each intent, not in a monthly total per agent. We probed every public Amex host for the spec and an MCP server, and the full results are on our American Express agentic commerce page.
Are Visa and Mastercard agent tokens a credit card for AI agents?
They are the plumbing under one. Visa Intelligent Commerce and Mastercard Agent Pay both issue tokenized credentials to recognized agents, so the agent never holds the real card number and the merchant can tell an agent checkout from a bot. You do not buy them directly. They reach you through your card issuer or through the agent platform you use, and what limits you can set depends on that issuer. If you are choosing between the networks, our Visa vs Mastercard agent comparison covers how each registers agents and where the controls sit.
What is the best credit card for AI agents for a business?
For a company, the right shape is not one clever card. It is one card or wallet per agent, with the rules held somewhere the agent cannot edit. Here is the checklist we would use to judge any option.
- One credential per agent. If two agents share a card, you cannot tell which one spent the money or shut off just one.
- A running total per agent. A per-purchase cap of 200 dollars is not a budget if the agent can make 60 purchases. You want a monthly ceiling that counts.
- A merchant allowlist. A procurement agent should be able to pay your cloud provider and your supply vendor, and nobody else.
- An approval threshold with a named person. Above a set amount the purchase waits for a human, and the request expires if nobody answers.
- Clear liability. Know before the first purchase whether a wrong order is your loss, the issuer's or the vendor's. Amex and Robinhood answer this differently.
- Audit at close. Agent, amount, merchant, rule and approver in one export your accountant can match to the statement.
Corporate virtual cards from a spend platform get you the first and third points well. They were designed for employees, though, so the card has a limit but the agent behind it has no identity, and the moment an agent pays with a second card or a stablecoin wallet for API calls, the totals split.
How much does an agentic credit card cost?
The cards themselves are cheap. Robinhood's requires Gold membership at 50 dollars a year and pays 3 percent back. Amex ACE adds no published fee to the Card Member. Corporate virtual cards are usually included in spend platform plans. The real cost is the spend you did not intend: duplicate orders, a subscription the agent renewed, a retry loop that charged ten times. That is why the limit design matters more than the card's rewards rate.
How AgentsPay gives each agent its own card and budget
AgentsPay is the control plane in front of the card. Each agent gets its own wallet and identity and, where it needs to pay by card, scoped virtual cards locked to the merchants you allow. Every purchase is checked against a per-agent spend limit that totals across the month, a per-transaction ceiling and an approval threshold before any card is charged, and the agent cannot change its own policy. The same budget applies whether the agent pays by card, over x402 or through a Stripe balance, so one agent has one number.
At month end, the audit trail lists every decision with agent, amount, merchant and approver. If your bookkeeper still matches card lines by hand, reconciliation software that matches bank lines and payouts takes care of that last step. Frequently asked questions
Can I give my AI agent my credit card?
You can, but you should not give it your real card number. Use a virtual card or agentic token issued for that agent, with its own limit and merchant lock, so you can cut it off without replacing your own card. A registered agent on Amex also keeps you inside Agent Purchase Protection, which a pasted card number does not.
Is an agent purchase covered by fraud protection?
Usually not, because you authorized the agent. Robinhood's terms say you are solely responsible for transactions your agent makes under your instructions. Amex is the exception so far: its Agent Purchase Protection credits Card Members for errors by registered agents acting on a certified intent.
Does the Robinhood agentic credit card work for business purchases?
It is a personal card for Robinhood Gold Card holders, and its terms may restrict rewards on business-type transactions. It suits one person automating their own shopping. A company with several agents, approvers and a month-end close needs per-agent cards and budgets it controls centrally.
What spending limit should I set for an AI agent?
Start with the agent's real monthly need plus a margin, a per-transaction cap well below that, and an approval threshold for anything unusual. A procurement agent buying supplies might get 2,000 dollars a month, 250 per purchase, and approval above 150. Raise limits from evidence in the audit trail, not from the first week's guess.
