PayPal Agentic Commerce Alternative: Govern What Your Agents Spend

PayPal Agentic Commerce exists so merchants can get paid by shoppers inside AI assistants. Agentspay is for the other side of the transaction: governing what your own agents are allowed to spend.

In short

Which PayPal Agentic Commerce alternative you need depends on which side of the transaction you are on. PayPal Agent Ready and Store Sync are sell-side: they let a store accept payments from shoppers' AI assistants, appear in AI shopping surfaces, and keep PayPal's buyer protection and dispute resolution. Agentspay is buy-side: a rail-neutral control plane that gives each of your agents a wallet, hard spend limits, human approval above a threshold, scoped virtual cards, and an immutable audit trail. If you want to be paid by agents, PayPal fits well. If you need to govern agents that spend your money, you need a control plane.

Where PayPal Agentic Commerce fits

If you already accept PayPal and you want your catalog to be buyable inside AI assistants, PayPal is a strong and genuinely low-effort answer. Agent Ready lets existing merchants take payments on AI surfaces, and Store Sync pushes catalog, inventory and fulfillment into them. It is live on Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity, with ChatGPT and Gemini announced. It also brings buyer protection, fraud detection and dispute resolution, which crypto-native agent rails simply do not have.

Where Agentspay fits

PayPal answers the question "how does my store get paid by a shopper's agent". Agentspay answers "how do I stop my own agents overspending". Those are different products for different buyers, and it is worth being blunt about that. In PayPal's agentic commerce documentation we found no developer-facing policy engine, no programmable human-approval API, no scoped per-agent virtual card issuing, and no agent-attributed audit log: its controls are framed around a consumer deciding whether to let an assistant buy on their behalf. If you run a fleet of agents that spend company money, that governance layer is the part you still have to build or buy.

An honest look at how each one approaches agent payments.

Dimension Agentspay PayPal Agentic Commerce
Which side of the transaction Buy side. Governs the agents your business runs. Sell side. Lets merchants accept payments from shoppers' AI assistants.
Settlement rails Rail-neutral, in front of your existing issuer and rails. PayPal wallet, cards, buy-now-pay-later and bank funding. Real fiat rails that carry disputes.
Spend policy for your agents Policy engine checks every agent request before money moves. No developer-facing policy engine found in its agentic commerce documentation.
Human approval Programmable, threshold-based approval gates for teams. Consumer-level choice to authorize an assistant or require permission for each purchase.
Virtual cards Scoped, single-use, time-bound virtual cards, one per agent. Tokenized agent credentials rather than scoped per-agent card issuing.
Audit trail Immutable, agent-attributed record across every rail. Standard PayPal transaction records and dispute flows.
Buyer protection and disputes Inherits the dispute rights of whichever card rails you use. A genuine strength: buyer protection, fraud detection and dispute resolution.
Availability Available now, sandbox-first. Rolling out. Access to Agent Ready runs through a request form; live today on Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity.
