Short answer: Zendesk AI agents are included in every Suite and Support plan and billed per automated resolution, meaning a customer request the AI agent closed with no human involved. Plans include 5 resolutions per agent per month on Team, 10 on Growth and 15 on Professional and Enterprise. Past that you either allow overage, which third-party reviews put at about 1.50 dollars per resolution committed and 2.00 dollars pay-as-you-go, or pause the AI agent. The resolution fee is the small number. If your AI agent issues refunds, the refunds are the big one.
We read Zendesk's pricing page and its billing article on automated resolutions on 29 September 2026. Zendesk publishes the plan prices and the included allocations. It does not print a per-resolution rate on the pricing page, so any figure you see for that, including ours, comes from quotes and reviews rather than a Zendesk price list. Ask your account executive for the rate in writing before you commit.

How much does a Zendesk AI agent cost per resolution?
Expect roughly 1.50 to 2.00 dollars per automated resolution once the included allocation is used up, with the lower rate for resolutions you commit to in advance. Zendesk states only that the overage rate is higher than the committed rate and that overage is billed monthly regardless of your subscription term. Enterprise buyers negotiate their own rate, so treat the public figures as a ceiling for planning, not a quote.
What counts as a Zendesk automated resolution?
An automated resolution is a customer request the AI agent resolved without escalation to a human agent. Zendesk runs a second check with a language model to confirm the conversation really was resolved before it counts, and on messaging a legacy rule counts a resolution after two hours of inactivity when the AI evaluation found the answer relevant. Conversations that end with a handoff to a person are not billed as automated resolutions.
That definition has a consequence buyers miss. The meter counts outcomes, not work. A resolution that answers "where is my order?" and a resolution that cancels and refunds a 400 dollar order cost the same on the Zendesk invoice.
Do Zendesk automated resolutions roll over?
Not beyond the term. Zendesk's billing article says your allocation of automated resolutions expires annually or at the end of your subscription term. Unused resolutions in a slow quarter carry within the year, then lapse. If your volume is seasonal, size the commitment to the annual total rather than the busiest month, and let pay-as-you-go absorb the peak.
What happens when you run out of automated resolutions?
You choose in advance. Zendesk lets an admin either allow overage, which bills every extra resolution at the overage rate each month, or pause the AI agent when the allocation runs out, which sends customers to your human queue instead. Pausing caps the Zendesk bill exactly. It is also the only built-in cap on AI agent spend that Zendesk offers, and it caps the fee, not the money the agent moves.
A worked budget for a 20-seat US support team
Take a 20-agent team on Suite Professional where the AI agent closes 2,000 requests a month. The figures below use Zendesk's published seat prices and allocations, the third-party resolution rates, and an illustrative refund mix you should replace with your own data.
| Line | Math | Monthly |
|---|---|---|
| Suite Professional seats | 20 x 115 dollars | 2,300 dollars |
| Included resolutions | 20 x 15 = 300 | 0 dollars |
| Extra resolutions, committed | 1,700 x 1.50 dollars | 2,550 dollars |
| Same extra resolutions, pay-as-you-go | 1,700 x 2.00 dollars | 3,400 dollars |
| Copilot for all agents (optional) | 20 x 50 dollars | 1,000 dollars |
| Refunds issued by the AI agent (illustrative) | 400 refunds x 60 dollars | 24,000 dollars |
The AI line on the Zendesk invoice lands between 2,550 and 3,400 dollars. The refunds in this example are seven to nine times larger, and they appear on your Shopify or Stripe payout report, not on anything Zendesk sends you. That is not a criticism of Zendesk. A helpdesk bills for helpdesk work. It is a reason to budget the two numbers together and to decide who controls the second one.
Is Zendesk AI Agents Advanced priced separately?
Zendesk quotes the Advanced tier through sales, and it is the tier you need for generative procedures, API integrations and actions such as refunding a Shopify order. Our Zendesk AI agents and AI Agents Advanced breakdown covers what those actions can do, what we measured on the Zendesk MCP server, and where Zendesk does and does not let you put an approval step. The short version: auto assist lets you mark a refund action agent-approved, and neither product has a refund amount threshold.
How to keep the refund side of the bill under control
The resolution fee has a built-in ceiling, because you can pause the AI agent. The refunds do not. A procedure that says "only refund orders under 150 dollars" is an instruction to a language model, and a persuasive customer or an injected prompt can talk a model out of an instruction. The reliable fix is to make the refund action call a service that enforces the rule before any money moves:
- a per-refund ceiling tied to the original order total,
- a daily and monthly refund total per AI agent, so small refunds cannot add up unnoticed,
- refunds only to the original payment method,
- a human approval threshold for anything larger or unusual,
- an audit record that ties each refund to the ticket, the order and the rule applied.
That is what AgentsPay does. Your Zendesk custom action calls AgentsPay, AgentsPay checks the refund policy for that agent, and only then calls your processor. Larger refunds pause for a one-tap approval, and the agent's credentials cannot raise their own limit. You keep paying Zendesk per resolution and gain a hard ceiling on what those resolutions give away.
Zendesk vs other per-resolution pricing
Zendesk is one of several vendors that price AI support on outcomes. Salesforce meters Agentforce in Flex Credits, which we cover in our Agentforce pricing guide, and other helpdesks charge a flat rate per resolution. Our longer look at outcome-based pricing for AI agents compares the models. If the per-resolution math does not work for your volume, it is worth pricing an AI customer service platform with its own pricing model alongside Zendesk before you sign a commitment.
Frequently asked questions
Are Zendesk AI agents free?
No. The Essential AI agent is included in every Suite and Support plan, but each automated resolution counts against an allocation of 5 to 15 per agent per month, and resolutions beyond that are billed. You pay for the plan seats, then per resolution once the allocation is used.
Is Zendesk AI charged per agent or per resolution?
Both, for different things. Plans and Copilot are charged per human agent per month. AI agent usage is charged per automated resolution beyond the included allocation. There is no separate seat for the AI agent itself.
Can I cap my Zendesk AI agent bill?
Yes. Choose to pause the AI agent when the allocation runs out instead of allowing overage. That caps the Zendesk fee exactly. It does not cap refunds or credits the AI agent issues through actions, which need their own limit in the system that moves the money.
