SAP Joule Pricing 2026: SAP AI Units Cost, Joule Agents Pricing and Joule Studio Cost

Short answer: Joule Base is included with every SAP cloud subscription and costs nothing extra. Joule Agents and other Premium AI are paid in AI Units, and SAP-delivered agents are priced at 0.02 AI Units per agent action. SAP Discovery Center converts one AI Unit to 8.06 US dollars, so a standard agent action lists at about 16 cents. Custom agents built in Joule Studio are free to design and, per SAP, free to run in production through the end of 2026.

If you are building the SAP Joule business case this quarter, the useful news is that SAP publishes more of its AI pricing than most enterprise vendors do. The less useful news is that it is spread across a pricing FAQ, a service catalog and your order form. We pulled it together from SAP's own sources on 26 September 2026, then added the cost that none of them covers.

What does SAP Joule cost?

SAP splits Joule into two tiers. Base AI, which includes Joule itself, is included with SAP cloud subscriptions and SAP states that it requires no AI Units. Premium AI covers Joule Agents, advanced AI services and SAP Joule for Consultants, and it is paid in AI Units.

SAP has also announced a simplification. Most generative AI features are moving into Base AI, the per-user Joule Premium packages for Finance, HCM, Supply Chain, Spend Management and CX are being retired, and Premium AI is being refocused on agents priced per action. If your current quote still carries a per-user Joule Premium line, ask your account team how it maps to the new model before you sign a multi-year term.

What are AI Units, and what is one worth in dollars?

AI Units are SAP's single virtual currency for Premium AI. You buy them annually under SKU 8019164, they sit in one shared pool across your SAP cloud products, and they are only consumed when Premium AI does work. Unused AI Units expire after 12 months.

SAP's pricing page does not print a dollar figure next to them, but SAP Discovery Center, which powers SAP's own cost estimator, does. Its published conversion rate is:

That euro figure is the "7 euros per unit" several licensing blogs quote without a source. It is SAP's number. Several of those same blogs also quote a minimum purchase of 100 units. We could not find that minimum in any SAP source, so treat it as a question for your account executive rather than a fact.

How are Joule Agents priced?

SAP's pricing FAQ states it directly: all SAP-delivered agents in 2026 are priced at 0.02 AI Units per agent action. An action is a single step, such as calling a service, triggering a workflow or generating a response, and an idle agent consumes nothing.

The per-agent rate plans in Discovery Center show the published rate is a ceiling rather than a flat fee. On 26 September 2026 the catalog listed 63 agents, 52 of them billable. A few representative rates per action:

Look at the zeros. Some of the agents closest to cash, the one that proposes bank transfers and the one that clears payables, currently cost nothing per action. That is good for your AI Unit budget. It also means the AI Unit meter tells you nothing about the money those agents move.

What does a Joule agent cost at production volume?

The arithmetic is simple enough to do before the vendor call. Take a procurement agent that handles 2,000 requisitions a month and averages 12 actions per requisition: lookups, supplier checks, a draft, a submission.

• 2,000 requisitions times 12 actions is 24,000 actions a month.
• At 0.02 AI Units each, that is 480 AI Units a month, or 5,760 a year.
• At 8.06 dollars per unit, the list cost is about 3,870 dollars a month, or roughly 46,400 dollars a year.

The number that moves the forecast is actions per task, not the rate. Instrument a pilot and count them. Teams that assume a handful of actions per task routinely underestimate by a factor of three or more, and because units are bought annually and expire, both an overestimate and an underestimate cost you: one strands prepaid units, the other runs into excess use.

What happens if I exceed my purchased AI Units?

SAP bills consumption beyond your pool under excess-use, pay-per-use terms at the applicable AI Unit rate. SAP for Me shows AI Unit consumption in near real time, and an administrator can deactivate an agent or feature to stop further usage. We found no published hard cap that automatically stops agents when the pool is exhausted, so the brake is a person watching a dashboard. Get the excess-use rate written into your order form, and keep that order form, renewal date and unit balance somewhere your finance team actually tracks, such as your contract management software, because unused units lapse on the anniversary whether anyone remembers or not.

How much does Joule Studio cost?

Building your own agents is priced differently from SAP's agents:

• Design time is free within SAP's fair-use guidelines. The Joule Studio agent builder is listed at 0.00 AI Units per request.
• Production runtime is billed on SAP BTP for compute, storage, transactions and AI tokens, through the BTP Enterprise Agreement.
• SAP states that running custom-built agents in a productive Joule Studio runtime is free through the end of 2026.

The underlying BTP services have public US list prices in Discovery Center. SAP AI Core, which serves the models, is 1.20 dollars per Capacity Unit on BTPEA and 1.56 on pay-as-you-go. SAP Build runtime is 1.15 and 1.49. A Build developer user is 46 dollars a month on BTPEA. The token-to-Capacity-Unit conversion for each model sits in an SAP Note that requires a login, so model a custom agent's token cost with your SAP contact rather than from a blog.

Plan for 2027 now. A custom agent that is free to run today becomes a BTP line item in January, and it is much easier to set a per-agent budget before an agent is in production than after.

The cost line AI Units never measure

Every number above answers one question: what does it cost to run the agent? None of them answers the question your controller will ask in the rollout review: how much can the agent spend?

That is not an oversight in the pricing, it is a difference in ledgers. AI Units meter SAP's work. The money an agent moves, the bank transfer the Cash Positioning Agent proposes, the purchase order a requisition agent submits, the SaaS renewal or API top-up a custom Joule Studio agent pays through an external connection, is not denominated in AI Units and never touches the pool. The two agents with the most direct line to cash list at zero AI Units per action, which makes the point neatly.

We measured whether the Joule layer can carry a dollar limit at all. Across the packages SAP publishes for Joule Studio there are 480 unique property names and not one amount, currency or budget field, and the only number on a Joule agent is an iteration count. SAP's purchase order model, by contrast, has an overall limit amount. The full measurement is in our SAP Joule spend controls breakdown.

For spend that lands as an SAP document, your S/4HANA or Ariba release strategy is the control, and it is a good one. For everything an agent pays outside an SAP document, budget it the way you would a new employee with a card: a monthly limit per agent in dollars, a list of approved merchants, and an approval threshold above which a named person decides. Is SAP Joule worth it at these prices?

For an SAP-centric business, usually yes. Base Joule is free, 16 cents an action is cheap next to the loaded cost of a person doing the same lookup and posting, and several finance agents currently cost nothing per action. The pricing model is also more transparent than most, because the conversion rate and per-agent plans are public if you know where to look. The same per-action pattern shows up at UiPath and Salesforce Agentforce, and neither publishes as much.

The risk is not the rate. It is treating the AI Unit budget as the agent budget. Size the pool from a pilot, contract for the excess-use rate, and put a dollar ceiling on anything an agent can pay outside SAP before it goes live.
