Workday Flex Credits Pricing: Workday AI Agent Costs, Credits per Action and the Spend No Credit Covers

Short answer: Workday Flex Credits are a prepaid annual pool of credits that every Workday AI agent draws from per completed task in production. Workday's published example is 1 credit for a Self-Service Agent information lookup and 5 credits for an autonomous task. Workday has not published a dollar price per credit, so the rate is set in your order form. The credits cover what Workday charges for agent work. They do not cover, cap or even see what an agent spends with anyone else.

How Workday Flex Credits work

Workday announced Flex Credits at Workday Rising on 16 September 2025, alongside a new set of Illuminate agents. The model replaced the idea of buying each AI capability as a separate SKU. According to Workday's own Flex Credits page, the mechanics are:

• Bought in bulk, annually. Your Flex Credit subscription is an annual purchase sized to expected usage, not a monthly pay-as-you-go bill.
• Consumed in production, per completed task. Workday meters an agent when it finishes a task, not per token and not per employee. Testing in non-production environments does not draw down credits.
• Fungible across agents. The same pool funds any eligible agent or platform capability, including Workday Data Cloud and Sana, so credits can be moved between use cases without a new procurement cycle.
• Fixed cost per skill. Each metered skill has a set number of credits per action, based on Workday's estimate of the time it saves.
• Complimentary credits. Customers get an annual complimentary allotment sized to company size, intended to generate real usage data before you commit.
• A console, not a cap. The Platform Consumption Console shows usage and sends automatic notifications when your balance runs low.

Workday Flex Credits pricing: what is published and what is reported

Two kinds of numbers circulate, and they deserve different levels of trust. Workday itself publishes consumption examples, not prices. Consultancies that work on Workday renewals publish ranges they have seen on rate cards. We keep them apart below.

The practical reading: the spread between a 1-credit lookup and a 750-credit talent or contract run is where budgets break. A pool sized on help-desk questions will drain quickly once someone points a heavy agent at a large data set.

How much do Workday Flex Credits cost?

Workday does not publish a dollar price per Flex Credit; the rate is agreed in your order form and depends on volume and term. Consultancies have estimated around 0.10 USD per credit, but treat that as a planning placeholder. Ask your account executive for the per-credit rate and the full rate card in writing before you sign.

Are Workday AI agents included in my subscription?

Partly. Workday provides a complimentary annual allotment of Flex Credits sized to company size, which lets you run agents in production at no added cost up to that allotment. Usage beyond it draws on credits you buy. Testing in non-production environments does not consume credits.

Do unused Workday Flex Credits roll over?

Workday's public material does not state a rollover rule, and the consultancy write-ups we checked do not either. Because the subscription is annual, assume unused credits expire at the end of the term unless your order form says otherwise, and negotiate that clause explicitly.

How to budget Workday Flex Credits for a first year

Size the pool the way you would size any consumption contract: by action, not by headcount.

1. List the skills you will actually turn on. For each one, get its credit cost per action from the rate card attached to your order form.
2. Estimate monthly actions per skill. Self-service lookups scale with employee questions. Heavy runs scale with how often someone launches them, so count those by hand.
3. Burn the complimentary credits first. Run the agents you plan to buy against the free allotment for a quarter and use the console data as your baseline, which is what Workday designed the allotment for.
4. Add a buffer for heavy skills only. A 20 percent buffer on 1-credit lookups is noise. A 20 percent buffer on a 750-credit skill is the difference between staying inside the pool and paying overage.
5. Put a person on the low-balance alert. The console notifies you; it does not stop usage. Decide in advance who can pause an agent when the alert fires.

Every number above is what Workday charges you for an agent's work. None of it describes what an agent spends on your behalf. That is the third cost line, and it is the one with no ceiling.

A travel agent that books a 4,000 dollar flight might cost 5 credits on the Workday side. A sourcing agent that renews a data subscription might cost a handful of credits and commit 30,000 dollars. The credits are the small number.

Do Workday business process approvals cover agent spending?

Only for spend that becomes a Workday document. A requisition, supplier invoice request or expense report an agent creates goes through your normal approvals and budget check. A card payment, SaaS purchase or API charge made through an agent's HTTP or MCP tools never enters a Workday business process.
